A deadhead is any leg flown without revenue passengers: the aircraft flying out to pick you up, returning to base after dropping you off, or crew traveling on an airline ticket to meet an aircraft parked away from home. The term comes from railroad slang for non-paying riders, and in charter it describes the least glamorous, most expensive fact of the business — jets constantly have to be somewhere other than where they are.

The economics are simple and unforgiving. A deadhead burns the same fuel, crew duty hours, and maintenance reserves as a revenue leg, so the operator prices it into your trip. This is where the standard one-way shorthand comes from: a one-way charter typically prices around block hours × hourly rate × 1.5, with the extra 50% covering the empty flying on either side. On a 3-block-hour leg in a midsize jet at $3,300–4,600 per hour, that premium represents roughly $5,000–7,000 of deadhead cost baked into the total — real flying you pay for without ever boarding.

For the customer, deadheads explain why quotes for the identical trip can differ by thousands. An operator with an aircraft already parked at your departure airport has almost no deadhead to recover; one positioning from 500 miles away has an hour of empty flying on each end. It also explains round-trip pricing: if the aircraft waits for you and flies you home, the operator sells four useful legs against one repositioning cycle, which is why a two-day round trip often costs far less than two separate one-ways. Terminology trips people up at the edges. A deadhead the operator manages to sell at a discount becomes an empty leg — same flight, different accounting. A positioning or ferry flight is a deadhead described from the operator's planning side, and when it appears as an explicit line item on a quote it is usually labeled a ferry fee. And crew deadheading on the airlines to recover an aircraft is a real cost too — one reason late-night or far-flung one-ways sometimes carry surcharges that look odd until you picture two pilots overnighting in a hotel a thousand miles from home.
